The station was founded in 1947 as WFIL-TV (the "FIL" was a combination of the call letters of two early radio stations that later merged to form radio sister WFIL; it was merely a coincidence that they were close to a phonetic spelling of "Philadelphia"), the station was owned by Triangle Communications and it was a sister company to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

This design's incorporating the network logo into the numeral "6" could with some accuracy be considered the direct design forerunner of the most recent station logo, shown below, even though it was not/isn't employed as a reference for the later design.

WFIL introduced this logo on Monday, September 11, 1967. This "6" logo has been used by the station since, surviving both a callsign and ownership change, with some secondary design elements being changed along the way.
WPVI-TV[]
On Tuesday, April 27, 1971, WFIL-TV became the current WPVI-TV after Triangle sold the station to Capital Cities Communications, Inc. Then-announcer Paul Norton reassured viewers "It's STILL Channel 6."
1971–present[]
1971–1997[]
The change of the station call sign which led/leads into a revision of the Channel 6 logo which used the same type font style as previously back in 1967.
In 1986, Capital Cities bought ABC and changed its name to Capital Cities/ABC. This led to WPVI becoming a flagship station to the network alongside WABC-TV in New York.
1997–2010[]
In 1996, The Walt Disney Company absorbed Capital Cities/ABC into itself to giving rise to the Disney-ABC Television Group which still exists at the present time. The station logo design, however, did not/didn't immediately reflect this take-over of the station's parent network.
2010–2021[]
In 2010, WPVI-TV's new logo was/is given an update; while the "6" design remained the same as it has been since it first debuted on Monday, September 11, 1967, A blue circle with a white outline was/is added, which made it look more similar to the logos used by most of WPVI-TV's fellow ABC O&O television stations. The Red ABC Circle logo located on the bottom right of the "6" was changed to the black circle version that the network had been using since 1962.

Moreover, at the bottom right of the "6" was changed to the black "sphere" version that the network had been using since 2007 and it was/it's also slightly enlarged.
2013–2021[]
The logo used since 2010 remained the same but with a minor change as the ABC Circle logo was modified.
