1st logo (1979-1988)
Logo: Against a black background, we see a white line drawing in what looks like a TV tube, but it drops down to write an "S", then writing out the word "Select" in a very fancy cursive font. As it finishes the "T", the line drops down to form an underline, then, a rainbow-colored "Video" in a font similar to the UK Palace Video logo, zooms out. Three stars blink on the logo.
Variants:
- At the end of tapes, the logo is shown again, but it starts just before the first star blinks.
- On some tapes, such as Space Sentinels, after the third star blinks, the first star blinks again before the logo fades out.
- At the end of the 1985 UK VHS of Groovie Ghoulies, the full logo plays (or rather, starting a second into the animation) and fades out right after the third star blinks.
FX/SFX: The drawing in of the logo, "Video" zooming out, the stars blinking.
Music/Sounds: A very ominous Moog synthesizer jingle that sounds (a little) like the 1985 FHE "Writing Pad" jingle, then four synth dings as the three stars blink.
Music/Sounds Variants:
- On later tapes, a dramatic synth theme is used when the letters write out, followed by calm synth bells (again, four) when the three stars blink.
- The closing variant is silent.
Availability: Can be found on old UK Popeye, Lassie, and Zorro videos distributed by Video Gems, as well as Filmation programs. Also found on a German Asterix VHS.
Editor's Note: The effects, while acceptable for 1979, had grown more dated over time. Also, why are there four dings as the three stars blink?
2nd logo (1988) Logo: On a white background, the same logo as before is shown again, this time with a sliding rainbow pattern and a registered trademark sign underneath "Select."
FX/SFX: The logo.
Music/Sounds: None.
Availability: Rare.
